Mary T. Yates, M.Ed.
Director, Physician Workplace Support ProgramMary Yates has spent more than 25 years in the business of helping individuals and organizations through the change process; including eight years as a self employed management consultant where the majority of her work was in the health care and hospital field. For the last 11 years, Mary has been on faculty with the Canadian Medical Association’s Physician Manager Institute and has designed and delivered workshops at the CMA annual conference ‘Leadership for Medical Women’ on several occasions. She has designed and delivered courses on behalf of the Quality Health Network and has been on faculty with Ryerson University in the Training and Development Program. She has a Master of Education degree in Adult Education (Human Resources Development), has achieved Advanced Level standing from the Ontario Society for Training and Development and completed an internship in Organization & Human Resources Development through University Associates in Tuscon AZ. Currently Mary is Director of the Physician Workplace Support Program, a unique service offered through the Physician Health Program of the Ontario Medical Association. mary.yates@oma.org
Dr. Michael Kaufmann BSc, MD, CCFP, FCFP, ASAM, CSAM, dip. ABAM
PHP Medical Director Dr. Kaufmann graduated with a degree in medicine from the University of Toronto in 1979. He completed his training in Family Medicine at the University of Toronto then received certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 1981. The College of Family Physicians honoured him in 1991 with a Fellowship award. After 14 years of practising family and addiction medicine in rural Ontario, in 1995 Dr. Kaufmann became the founding Director of the Physician and Professionals Health Program of the Ontario Medical Association - a service designed to assist doctors and other health professionals with substance abuse, psychiatric disorders and other personal health and behavioural problems. He received certification in Addiction Medicine from the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) in 1996 and the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) in 2000 and is presently a diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine.Dr. Kaufmann is a past chairperson of the Physician Health Committee of CSAM and the Canadian Physician Health Network, a national affiliation of physician support programs and a faculty member of the Physician Manager Institute of the Canadian Medical Association. Dr. Kaufmann is an invited speaker, teacher and consultant nationally and internationally and has written extensively on the subject of doctors’ health. In 2003 Dr. Kaufmann was awarded a Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in recognition of his work in the field of doctors’ health and in 2009 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement in Addiction Medicine Award from the Addiction Medicine Section of the Ontario Medical Association. Dr. Kaufmann and his wife, Judy, live in a rural setting where they enjoy walking their dogs, gardening, and skiing. Most of all, Dr. Kaufmann is an avid golfer and does his best to live a healthy lifestyle and to practise what he preaches. michael.kaufmann@oma.org
Bess Williams, MLA/T
Senior Administrator Physician Health Program and Physician Workplace Support Program Bess joined the Physician Health Program (PHP) in 2004. She currently provides direct support to the PHP Medical Director, Associate Medical Director and, since the program’s inception in 2010, to the Director Physician Workplace Support Program (PWSP). Bess is actively involved in the creation/testing of PHP/PWSP administrative processes, procedures and data maintenance. Bess is a certified medical office and laboratory assistant and an active member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). bess.williams@oma.org
